Chapter Six

A few days later

A lock of blond hair artfully curled around one stubbly cheek. A thumb rubbing against a full lower lip. The smooth lines of his model’s hands, strong, certain hands that Ashley had felt on his body only once in his life. The perfectly straight way he held his back even as he read through his file. Yes, like that, just like that. Ashley’s own hand worked avidly as he immortalized Heath’s figure on the piece of paper.

He’d almost completed his sketch when Heath moved, completely changing his position. Ashley groaned, which caused Heath to look up. “What is it? Are you okay?”

Even if Ashley had been healing nicely from the attack, Heath still displayed concern for the silliest of reasons. “I’m fine,” Ashley said with a huff. “I was trying to draw you and you moved.”

“Oh.” Heath chuckled. “All right. Just tell me how I should sit so you can finish your sketch.”

Ashley didn’t bother. It wasn’t the same now that Heath knew about it. Ashley had been trying to capture that distinctive look of concentration that always passed over Heath’s face whenever he researched something, but that spark had faded away now. “Don’t worry about it,” he told Heath. “It was just a sketch. Creative release, if you will.”

He tossed away the sketchbook and pencil and curled up on the couch. The physical pain from the beating hadn’t disappeared completely, but it was fading. His problem, one he hadn’t originally realized, stemmed from something far deeper.

Heath abandoned his papers on the desk and came to sit down on the couch next to Ashley. Ashley leaned against Heath, sighing. He didn’t want to be a burden, but somehow, he always ended up interrupting Heath’s work or distracting him from it. But he seriously couldn’t help it. Heath’s scent and his warmth were the only things keeping him from shattering.

His one comfort was that Heath didn’t seem to mind. “Tell you what,” Heath suggested. “I’m pretty much done with the work I needed to wrap up on this case, and I’d like a break. What do you say we go for a walk? Are you up for it?”

Ashley immediately perked up. He hadn’t left Heath’s condo since the other man had brought him here. Maybe cabin fever had started to creep up on him. Maybe if he faced the outside he’d be able to get a burst of inspiration once more. God, just the idea of being able to draw like before made him want to do laps, which of course, would have been unwise, given his not-completely healed condition. “Yes. Yes, of course.”

Heath chuckled. “I thought you were going to say that. Just be warned that we won’t be going very far.”

Ashley had known that before Heath had even said it, just like he knew that Heath would be watching him like a hawk all throughout their little stroll. In his heart, he didn’t really mind. He might protest to it, but Heath’s intensity was just a part of his charm.
